English Intent:
At Scartho Infants’ School and Nursery our text-based curriculum is designed to develop a love of reading and writing and encourage discussions around a broad variety of texts. Children learn, practise and embed knowledge and skills through our expansive, engaging curriculum, and receive high quality lessons which enable them to become confident, creative writers, fluent readers and successful communicators.
Phonics lessons focus on teaching word reading and fluency, reading skills lessons focus on supporting children to develop comprehension and show their understanding of texts, and English lessons focus on writing skills including composition and Spelling Punctuation and Grammar, (SPaG). In addition to this, handwriting is taught which encourages children to develop a sense of pride in their work and improve their presentation skills.
Texts are carefully chosen to be engaging, inspiring, and where appropriate, link to the knowledge and skills being taught in History and Geography. Children discuss both fiction and non-fiction texts as well as poetry, and write for a range of purposes while developing strong and secure literacy skills through a well-planned, carefully structured curriculum.
We know that these skills are vital for ensuring children are successful both in their education and the world beyond, and we therefore adapt our curriculum where necessary to suit the needs of children. This means that we ensure every child has the resources, opportunities and support to reach their full potential.
